Shaun Gilmore works in mixed media, painting, drawing, installation and sculpture. Her most recent sculptures – comprising the series “Branching Out” – are composed of recycled newspaper, wire and styrofoam.  These pieces grow organically, and the mark of the artist’s hand is always close and apparent.

A former modern dancer and choreographer – director of the Chicago Moving Company – the influence of movement and theatrical space is forefront in Shaun’s exploration of materials. Her work reflects her interest in line, balance and energy reaching into external and internal space. She is heavily influenced by the vast, raw and constantly evolving nature of the landscape in Galisteo and the Southwest.

Holding a BFA in painting and photography from the University of Michigan, Shaun has since studied Painting with Squeak Carnwath and Susan Rothenburg at the Santa Fe Art Institute and photography with Barbara Crane at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. An award winning artist, her work has appeared in numerous publications. She has been represented and shown by Eight Modern and Linda Durham Contemporary Art in New Mexico, Perimeter Gallery in Chicago, CFA Gallery in San Anselmo, CA., Chiaroscuro Gallery in AZ. and The New Mexico Museum of Art.

Influences include Greek pottery, tribal art, Japanese prints, the work of Louise Bourgeois, Tapies, early Philip Guston, Jean Dubuffet, Rothko, Eva Hesse, Susan Rothenburg and Patti Smith, and her parents, who were both artists, and instilled in her curiosity and a love of travel, texture and color.
